Weight loss pills – helpful or harmful?

Have you ever wished that there was a magic pill to melt away excess kilos?

Many medications and supplements make this claim, but what are they, what’s in them, and can they in fact be harmful? 

 

It is hard to easily find trustworthy information about weight loss supplements, as many people who write about them are actually the seller of the product, or are receiving incentives for affiliate marketing.

 

So how can we as consumers get reliable information about dietary supplements for weight loss? 

 

3 trustworthy places to do your research:  

  • The US National Institutes of Health has an Office of Dietary supplements, and they have done the hard work for you!  Check out their fact sheet.  You’ll find all the ones you may have heard of, including Garcinia Cambogia, Yohimbe and Ephedra.
  • You can also type in the name of the supplement or medication into Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) website.  The TGA approves medicines for use and Australia, and will also tell you whether you can import a medication.
  • Worth checking out for information and articles is the US site Healthline.  It is a digital publisher which is committed to ensuring their content is created, fact-checked, and reviewed by qualified writers, editors, clinicians, and other contributors including surgeons, midwives, oncologists and pharmacists, licensed nutritionists and dietitians.
